Types and Examples of Viruses

Most of the computer users are well aware of the definition and anatomy of the computer virus. These viruses can infect and damage computers a lot. You must know the types of these viruses so that you can remove them from your computers. There are different types of viruses.

 

Boot Viruses

The boot viruses the boot record of floppy or master boot records in the hard drive. The boot record programs are copied to some other location by these viruses. The operating systems are loaded in these boot records. The boot viruses enter the memory of the computers during the booting process when a computer tries to read from the disk. Disk killer, Stone virus and Michelangelo are some of the examples of the boot viruses.

 

Program Viruses

The program viruses generally infect the program files like files with the extensions .bin, ,com, .exe,. sys and .ovl. The virus loads in the memory when these programs are loaded where it can make copies of itself and infect the files on disk. Sunday can Cascade are the examples of program viruses.

The multipartite are the hybrid of boot and program viruses which can infect the program files during the execution of these programs. These viruses also infect the boot record. The virus can load itself in the memory when you boot the computer next time. When it is loaded in the memory, it can start infecting other programs files on disk. Invader, Flip and Tequila are the examples of the multipartite viruses.

The stealth viruses are very dangerous as these viruses are hard to detect because they use certain technique to avoid detection. These viruses can change the reading of the infected file size which is shown in the listing of the directory or they can also redirect the disk to the next sector instead to one where they are residing. These viruses can increase the file size by adding 9216 bytes to the infected file. Fordo, Joshi, and Whale are the examples of the stealth viruses.

Polymorphic viruses can encrypt the code in different ways and appear in different forms to infect computers. It is very difficult to detect these viruses. Stimulate, Virus 101, Proud, Cascade, Involuntary are the examples of the polymorphic viruses.

Macros viruses can infect the file within a document or template and it is a new type of virus. The macro virus infects the computer when you open word processing or spreadsheet and infect the normal template. Since every document is referred to as normal template therefore it can be infected very easily by the macros. When these documents are opened to other computers, these macros can spread as macros are attached to normal template files. DMV, Word concept and Nuclear are the examples of the macro viruses.
